New Flowr language: Slovenian

Posted in category General on August 30th, 2010 at 12:43 PM

Today we enabled our first Flowr translation: Slovenian. While it’s a small language  in global sense, it presented interesting challenges because of it’s grammatical complexity. By using it as a test case, we’ve shown that Flowr can be translated into most complex European languages and prepared translation infrastructure.

You can enable it from your profile settings (‘edit profile’).

Would you like to contribute your language? Let us know and we’ll give you access to translation interface.

Flowr Roadmap for the Future

Posted in category Thoughts on August 26th, 2010 at 3:08 PM

We have been very active during summer to prepare everything for the last quarter of this year. Currently we have a few thousand networks (companies, organizations, startups and schools) that are using Flowr to collaborate on daily basis. Positive feedback from users, intensive network growth and our product enthusiasm are our “drive and passion” that motivates us. As a CEO I would like to communicate more and here is a short preview of what we have been doing lately.

Current plan for Q3/Q4

  • New evolved Flowr UI
We have been listening to our users over the last 3 months since we launched Flowr a lot. Analyzing several different user behaviors, adding the most requested features and removing features that weren’t useful. In next few weeks we will be pushing out new (evolved) Flowr user interface that will be even simpler to use.

  • Flowr Translate System
There were a lot requests for having Flowr in additional languages and that’s why we have prepared easy to use web interface for translations, that uses standard open source tools (Gettext and Glotpress), but we have modified it with a simple UI to make it even easier to translate Flowr into other languages. Currently we are working on translation for additional 4 European languages, but our original plan is to support all major EU languages by the end of this year. Feel free to contact us if you would like to see Flowr in your language.

  • Flowr HTML5 mobile version & new iPhone version
Since we all need to be in touch with your team even while we are away, we decided to develop a light version of Flowr that can be accessible via mobile Phones. We know that having a native version for every mobile platform, is the best way to go, but developing good native versions take time. With this first version of Flowr Mobile we will support biggest mobile platforms, but we will be adding additional support for other platforms in the short future. In beginning of September we will also publish an updated version for iPhone users with many improvements and Google Apps sign-in.

  • Flowr API 2.0
We have worked very hard to develop totally new Flowr API 2.0.  Major change is that we will support only OAuth authentication and our API will be Twitter compatible; that means it will be extremely easy for developers with tools that already talk to Twitter to communicate with Flowr API as well.

  • Performance & Real-time
Since our networks are growing very fast we will start with major tasks that include Comet support for Real-time communication.

Where do we go from here
We’ll continue to listen to your feedback and shape the product to your needs, but from the mayor development perspective and our operational plan, we will mainly focus our development resources to:

  • work on stability of the product
  • new server infrastructure, that will scale to support our growth in year 2011,
  • adding support for 3rd party apps integration with some popular SAAS applications
  • improve search and recommendation system inside Flowr

From the marketing perspective, we will start with execution of our online marketing / sales strategy. If we would like to grow further, we need to get some rewards for our work. By the end of September we will prepare few pricing packages that will fit mostly for SME, finish PayPal implementation and start with first steps for monetization.

Our mission is still very clear; we would like to help companies increase collaboration and improve information flow, with easy to use tools.

Feel free to give us some feedback.

Help us translate Flowr to your language

Posted in category General on August 24th, 2010 at 10:52 AM

“Flowr should speak my language,”

was one of the most often heard feature request in our last months’ survey. Since English is not our native language, we know that using localized interface instantly makes the user experience better.

That is why we’re announcing Flowr Translate program, that enables Flowr community to help localize Flowr into your own language. Standing on shoulders of open-source community, we created easy-to-use web translation interface. This way everyone can contribute, without having to learn specialized tools. We do support them, if you prefer using them.

Now, we need your help with translations. If you’d love to see Flowr in your language and help with translation, send us an email and we’ll give you access. To thank you for your contributions, we have premium accounts for your own networks.

New Flowr Enterprise features

Posted in category General on August 13th, 2010 at 11:46 AM

While small distributed teams happily embrace online services like Flowr, established enterprises often require additional branding and security requirements to ensure that access limitations are properly in place.

With this in mind we’re happy to announce two branding related features and a new security enhancement:

1. Custom Flowr themes for your network

This feature allows you to prepare custom themes for your network users. This ensures that default look of your network is aligned with your other intranet and corporate web-pages.

To learn more about setting custom themes for your network, check out our blog post about Flowr custom themes.

2. Flowr on your domain

Second most requested feature was the ability to map your Flowr network to your own sub-domain, e.g. flowr.mycompany.com or community.mycompany.com.

To setup Flowr network on your domain, send the name of your network to support@theflowr.com and we’ll send you instructions on how to configure your DNS servers.

3. Limit access to your Flowr network based on IP ranges

Depending on security policies inside your enterprise you might need to limit access to your network to certain IP addresses. Inside admin panel you can define your network ranges. This way only people that are inside your corporate network or are using VPN can access web version of your Flowr network.

Both IP address and CIDR notation are supported.

What other Enterprise features are you looking forward to?

Custom theme for your Flowr network

Posted in category Tutorial on August 2nd, 2010 at 3:27 PM

Corporate branding is important for many aspects and while we believe that our default themes provide a positive experience towards online applications, we also support creating custom themes for your network.

To define custom themes for your network, go to Admin -> Themes and define your theme in Custom theme area:

After setting your theme, press Add custom theme button, to add the theme to available set of themes.

Once your theme is added, you can go to Edit Profile -> Profile Settings -> Themes to test your Custom theme in action:

Your custom theme will be default theme for new users in your network. Existing users will have to set it manually.

Have you created a great theme for your network? Send us a screenshot and we’ll feature it.
